Location: Ozar, Junnar Taluka, Pune District, Maharashtra, India
The Vighneshwar Temple located in Ozar is one of the eight sacred Ashtavinayak temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The temple holds special significance as it commemorates Lord Ganesha as "Vighnaharta"—the remover of obstacles. According to legend, Lord Ganesha defeated the demon Vighnasura at this very location, earning the name Vighneshwar, or the Lord of Obstacles.
This beautifully constructed temple is known for its elegant architecture and fortified walls. It was built in the 18th century and later renovated by Chimaji Appa, the brother of Peshwa Baji Rao I, using the wealth acquired after defeating the Portuguese at Vasai Fort. The temple features a spacious courtyard, deepmalas (lamp towers), and intricately carved wooden and stone work that reflect the artistic brilliance of the Maratha era.
The idol of Ganesha here is east-facing and adorned with a diamond-studded forehead. The sanctum is crowned with a gold pinnacle (kalasha) and features murals depicting various episodes from the life of Ganesha. Devotees from across the country come here to seek divine blessings, especially during times of personal or professional difficulties, believing Lord Vighneshwar will remove their problems.
