Location: Lenyadri, Pune District, Maharashtra, India
The Girijatmaj Temple in Lenyadri is one of the eight revered Ashtavinayak temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Uniquely situated within a series of ancient Buddhist caves, this temple is the only Ashtavinayak shrine located on a mountain, offering a blend of spiritual and historical significance.
According to legend, Goddess Parvati performed penance in the Lenyadri caves to beget a son. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Ganesha was born to her here, earning the name Girijatmaj, meaning 'son of Girija (Parvati)'. The temple is carved into a single rock and is accessed by climbing 307 steps, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The temple's architecture is simplistic yet profound, reflecting its monolithic origins. The sanctum houses a naturally formed idol of Lord Ganesha, and the temple's serene ambiance makes it a favored spot for meditation and spiritual reflection.
