Chintamani Ashtavinayak Temple

Location: Theur, Pune District, Maharashtra, India

About the Temple

The Chintamani Temple in Theur is one of the eight revered Ashtavinayak temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Situated approximately 25 km from Pune, this temple is renowned for its spiritual significance and serene surroundings. The temple is associated with the legend of Lord Ganesha retrieving the wish-giving jewel, Chintamani, for his devotee, Sage Kapila.

According to legend, a greedy king named Guna took the Chintamani jewel from Sage Kapila by force. The sage prayed to Lord Ganesha, who restored the jewel and punished the king. However, Kapila chose to forgo the jewel and instead requested Ganesha to reside at Theur to help devotees overcome their worries. Thus, Ganesha became known as Chintamani, the remover of worries.

The temple's architecture reflects the Peshwa era, with a spacious hall, wooden pillars, and a shikhara (spire) adorned with intricate carvings. The idol of Lord Ganesha is east-facing and has a precious gem embedded in its forehead. The temple's tranquil ambiance and historical significance make it a popular pilgrimage site.
